Earthquakes - The Inquiry.

What IS an "Earthquake"?

>The truth behind the devastating natural disaster.

Earthquakes are serious natural disasters, they give no warning. One minute your casually walking along when a thundering noise of the clatter of falling bricks and masonry. People are screaming, running for cover. Beautiful cities, turned to rubble in a matter of seconds. Earthquakes are disaster.
 Earthquakes are death in disguise.

How does an EarthQuake occur?

>What causes these major disasters?

The earth under us is divided into a series of  tectonic plates that move with the heat from the inner core of the earth. The plates shift, causing the vibrations that cause most of the damage to towns and cities. Faults occur in the surface of the earth and cracks appear on the earth.

How are Earthquakes measured?

> The science behind the tremors..

Earthquakes are measured in many ways, but two stand above the rest. The Richtorscale measures earthquakes by the depth and magnitude of the earthquake, and is used more often than the Mercalli Scale.
But for an earthquake to go up +1 on the Richtor scale, It has to be 30x as big as the previous number.
Heres a example of the Richter Scale:

The Mercalli scale measures the earthquake by how it's felt and the damage it does. Say, if the scale said 4, It would mean little damage was done, yet the tremor could only just be felt by a resting person. As it gets higher, the damage rises and gets worse.
Heres a picture of the Mercalli Scale:
